Deathwhite - If Type O Negative and Katatonia had a child that decided it really liked mid tempo double-bass kicks under gothy doom riffs it would probably sound something like Deathwhite. This caught me in the right mood the other day and I wound up really liking it.

Foscor - Depression has been kinda kicking my ass lately so Foscor's brand of gloomy atmospheric metal has been really hitting the spot.

Gore - Crushingly cyclical hypno-metal from The Netherlands. Think an instrumental Godflesh with live drums, raised on a steady diet of "My War" era Black Flag and you've got a pretty good idea of what's happening here. Their "Mean Man's Dream" LP is a big favorite of mine.

Obsidian Kingdom - If you threw Neurosis, Cave in, and Pink Floyd in a blender it would probably sound a little like Obsidian Kingdom. This stuff has also been working really well with whatever reverse seasonal-affective malaise has been glooming me the fuck out over these past couple weeks.

Ok, I keep meaning to branch out and write a little more coherently about the games I've been into on any given week, gonna try to make that happen starting now.

Neon White - First person shooters have never been my go to genre, but every once in a while one really grabs me. From DOOM's brutal gore and full on death metal aesthetics, to Superhot's stark visuals and weird strategic gameplay, and now to Neon White which seems to reconfigure the genre into thirty second doses of high-speed platform puzzling madness... I'm not deep into this yet, but I'm already pretty hooked.

Mario Golf: Super Rush - I had a weird pang of nostalgia for this long-defunct mini golf place I used to go to when I was a kid and picked this up to hopefully scratch that itch without having to golf around other people. It's fun so far... Even if I'm rather bad at it.

Still sorta reeling after a rough couple of weeks but I think I might finally be starting to feel the ground under my feet again...  We'll see.

In other news, we ran into that friend of ours who ghosted us a while back while we were up at the bottle shop. It was uncomfortable and awkward... Dude didn't acknowledge us or say hey just silently did his thing and left.

Egregore - First Impression is that they remind me of a grindy Morbid Angel with lots of reverb and some spaced out synth parts. Some of the fastest parts remind me of a more melodic/ less unhinged Gravesend. All told I'm really enjoying this, will see if it becomes a favorite.

-We bought an Alesis SR-16 mostly 'cos they're super cheap and pretty much THE weapon of choice for 90's bargain basement industrial metal/ spastic digi-grind/ and one man black metal skuzz.

-Chipping away at the "leftover" Infestation Ritual tracks... I honestly feel kinda bad calling them "leftovers" because the only reason they didn't wind up on the demo was down to time and some sucky family stuff that derailed the recording process.

-Working on a couple tracks that add drums and guitar to our wasteland drone/noise rituals and kind of wind up sounding somewhere between Chu Ishikawa, Emit, Demoncy, Megaptera, Troum, Fabio Frizzi, Legion of Andromeda, Godflesh, and Beherit... And yes, every bit as fucked as that sounds on paper.

I'm guessing Eremite probably isn't the first album most people think of when they think Pink Turns Blue, but I think it might be my overall favorite of their records... Mid-paced and riffy with a really dark/ mysterious mood that makes me think Dissection/ Necromantia/ early Rotting Christ/ Mortuary Drape/ Master's Hammer.

Desolate - I mentioned Scattered Remnants just now so I cant help but be reminded of 16 year old me's other favorite local band. Monstrous death metal with detours into creepazoid doom riffing and moments of completely "off the rails" blasting that border on war metal/ blackgrind chaos.

Desolate were insanely fucking heavy, especially for middle of nowhere Massachusetts circa '95.

Cotton Fantasy - Latest installment of this long running cutesy bullet-hell franchise. Pretty awesome even if I'm not particularly good at it yet. I think the character based on the ship from Psyvariar Delta is my favorite so far cos I'm pretty fond of the bullet grazing/ absorbing mechanic from that game.

Suicide has been on my mind a fucking lot lately... Not that I'm thinking of punching my own clock... I mean I do, pretty often, but I'm a stubborn motherfucker so I tend to fight through it and focus on other shit.

Anyway.

I guess what I mean is that for the past couple days suicide has been all over twitter and a lot of the websites I read 'cos of the dude from the Black Dahlia Murder and it has me thinking of way too many friends that checked out way too soon.

I dunno what else to say, really just that however alone you feel there's always someone out there who will think of you every single day even five, ten, twenty years after you're gone... The way I think of my friends Jess, Amy, Sean, Paul, and Tadashi.

All gone. All still here. Haunting my fucked up head. Day in. Day out. It's not what they would have wanted. It's sure as shit not what I want. It sucks. I miss them so much sometimes it's fucking stupid.

I want to drive somewhere with them.... Out to a show at the Palladium or to get food or something. I want to call them up and laugh about something, maybe walk our dogs by the water like we used to, but that ship sailed years ago and now all that's left are the memories.

Seriously, I know I can be a little cold/ blunt/ caustic sometimes, especially when it comes to "real life" advice but if you're reading this thinking of doing something permanent: Do me a favor and sort your shit out. Pick up the phone. Get help. If not for yourself then do it for for the people who will never quite be able to make sense of a world without you in it.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Ok, I'm "with it" enough to know that the first three Halo games were a really defining thing for a whole generation of gamers, but, I never had an Xbox so unfortunately I kinda missed the boat on the whole franchise. Checking the remasters out now and I'm digging them so far. Have to play in small doses because FPS games kinda give me low-level motion sickness if I play for more than half an hour.

Weekly Roundup #1

Ok, I initially shied away from the idea of doing a weekly roundup on this new site, but then I figured I would give it a try and see if it sticks... The plan is that this will be a real quick "birds eye view" of the various books, movies, music, and video games that helped keep me sane(ish) over the course of any given week.

I don’t know if I’m gonna bother with much of a preamble anymore (uh, after this one I mean), but at this point it's too early to say. Maybe I'll chime in here and there if I feel chatty?

That said, what I'm definitely not gonna bother with anymore is sinking like twelve hours per week into writing descriptions for all this shit then scraping together a ton of links like I used to do with the old roundups...  As far as I'm concerned, if you're curious about any of this stuff you can be a big boy and fucking google it yourself.

Latest iteration of this stubborn little webzine that, somewhat bafflingly, clings to life despite being on a ground-impact trajectory since about 2013.

The plan for the foreseeable future is to keep on keeping on with quick blurbs about albums I enjoy and maybe the occasional interview. We'll see where it goes from there.
